Book Sale June 2-5 to Support Literacy Results in $5000 Donation
Save the date for the June 2-5 semiannual Books to Benefit used book sale at the Crossroads Center (former outlet mall), 700 Wylie Drive in Normal. Proceeds from the sale help support STAR Adult Literacy. STAR Adult Literacy recently received an anonymous $5000 donation through the Illinois Prairie Community Foundation due, in large part, to interest generated by the Books to Benefit book sale.
Staffed completely by volunteers, Books to Benefit keeps operating costs at a minimum. The sale boasts over 20,000 books, movies and music. Vice President in Charge of Operations Norma Valentine added, “The strategic alliance [with STAR Adult Literacy] is a natural extension of our mission. We love books and work to share that passion with others. For a few dollars, patrons walk away with quality books, vintage records and family videos.”
During the preview sale on Thursday, June 2 from 5 – 8 p.m., a $5.00 admission allows the public to get first choice of the collection. “We are open Friday, June 3 from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. and Saturday, June 4 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. On Saturday from 2 – 5 p.m., everything is half price. Sunday, June 5 from noon to 4 p.m. is family day. Everything is on sale for $5 a bag,” commented Valentine. Phone (309) 531-8320 to learn more.
“We are excited that Books to Benefit agreed to donate the proceeds from book sales to our program. During hard economic times additional funding sources help us continue serving the community,” shared Literacy Coordinator Sheila Diaz.
“STAR’s initial training for new volunteers takes place on Saturday, June 4 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. at 200 W. Front Street, Room 323. STAR needs more volunteers to tutor the growing number of adult students seeking help to improve their reading or math skills or learn English as a second language. Training is free, and lunch will be provided,” said Diaz. Registration is required for the training.
